Senate Confirms Emefiele For Second Term As CBN GovernorGodwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has brushed off the anxiety surrounding his presidential ambition ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Emefiele spoke to journalists after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential house in Abuja.

Three support groups recently purchased the presidential nomination and expression of interest forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for him.

The CBN governor had, however, said he would purchase the form himself if he decides to contest.

Speaking on Thursday when asked by state house correspondents if he would resign, Emefiele refused to give a direct answer.

He said;

There is no news now, but there will be news. You heard me, I said there is no news but there will be news.

On if he was bothered about the speculations generated over if he would contest the presidency, Emefiele stated;

Let them have heart attack; it’s good to have heart attack; I am having a lot of fun.

His decision to run for president of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election while ruling over the national bank drew widespread condemnation.

On May 6, the CBN governor chose the APC’s N100 million presidential nomination and expression of interest form.

He had responded to the uproar surrounding his interest in the much-coveted position in February by declaring he would leave his fate completely in the hands of God.

Buhari has directed that all members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) contesting for elective seats submit their letters of resignation on or before Monday, May 16th, 2022.

Mike Ozekhome, Emefiele’s lawyer, nonetheless, filed a lawsuit under the number FHC/ABJ/CS/610/2022, challenging the legitimacy of Section 84(12) of the modified Electoral Act and prohibiting its application to him (a government appointee).

Meanwhile, Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has ordered the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, and other government personnel with political ambitions to resign.

The directive affects the CBN Governor, who is among the leaders of extra-ministerial departments, according to a circular released on Wednesday.

It reads;

For the avoidance of doubt, this directive affects all Ministers, Heads, and Members of Extra-Ministerial Departments, Agencies and Parastatals of Government, Ambassadors as well as other political appointees who desire to contest for elective offices.
