Before we delve deep into this article, we should take a moment to applaud the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for taking time out to scoop ice cream and speak with concerned Lagos state residents.

In a video that went viral on Thursday, the incumbent Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was seen scooping ice cream at a mall in Lagos state as he also socialized with the shop attendant.

The video has made Lagosians cringe and other social media users roll their eyes as they see-through the mundane political strategy to win the hearts of the people and possibly get their votes in the coming gubernatorial election.

The recent antics is coming just days after the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu surprisingly failed to win Lagos state, losing to Labour Party’s Peter Obi during the recently concluded 2023 presidential election. Despite winning the 2023 presidential election, Lagosians are dissatisfied with the ruling party.

For over two decades, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the political party, All Progressive Congress (APC) (at the time known as Action Congress Nigeria) have managed to control power in Lagos state. It is no news that those who emerged as Lagos state governors since the 2007 election were affiliated with the incoming president.

Afraid of suffering his predecessor’s fate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who came into the power during the predictable 2019 election decided it’s time to ‘scoop ice cream’ and develop a likeable gimmick, in atypical methodology applied by Nigerian politicians, he wants to win the heart of the people.

Since the youths like ice cream, they should like me too,” the Lagos state governor probably thought within himself days prior to the rescheduled 2023 presidential election.

Unfortunately, people understand that gimmicks are fickle and fake- It’s not genuine and whatever isn’t genuine would momentarily fizzle. This is a fireman approach to claiming votes, to winning the hearts of the people; the Lagos state governor has addressed his populace more times this week than he did in the first three years of his emergence into power.

What is Sanwo-Olu afraid of? Who is he trying to obstruct the people from thumbprinting into power?

On Saturday, March 18, citizens of the federal republic of Nigeria would once again take to the streets to decide who would emerge as the leader of their respective states. It would be interesting to see how the exercise unravels, as it has become apparent that Nigerians have become more politically aware and demanding for a change.
