Dowen College: Police Release Body Of 12-Year-Old Sylvester Oromoni To Family For Burial Following Autopsy

Nigerians Demand Justice For Sylvester Oromoni As Cousin Shares Graphic Videos Of 12-Year-Old Student Of Dowen College Before Death

Lagos State police command has released the body of the late student of Dowen College in the Lekki area of the state, Sylvester Oromoni, to his family for burial.

The command’s spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, said the 12-year-old student’s body was released to his family after an autopsy was conducted to ascertain the cause of his death, ThePunch reports.

He, however, said the result of the autopsy has not been released.

The statement reads; “Sylvester Oromoni: autopsy done. The result is being awaited. Corpse released to family for burial. Investigation ongoing.”

Recall that a family member simply identified as Pierreson Oromoni had announced the death of the student on December 2 via his Twitter page, claiming that Sylvester died from injuries he sustained from torture by his colleagues in the college.

The man added that the boy mentioned five names before he died, sparking outrage among many Nigerians who demanded justice for the deceased.

However, the management of the school had since dismissed the claim that the deceased was a victim of bully by his senior colleagues, saying he sustained injuries while playing football.

Reacting, the state government ordered the indefinite closure of the school to allow a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The family had demanded a coroner inquest into the student’s death while the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had said that some students have been arrested for the alleged assault.

Also, the solicitors to the family of the 12-year-old student, Falana & Falana’s Chambers, had accused blogger and social media personality, Kemi Olunloyo, of attempting to destroy the name of Sylvester on social media by claiming that the late student wanted to join a cult group in the Lekki-based school and had agreed to been beaten.

The law firm had asked Lagos State Police Command to invite Olunloyo to explain a “reckless allegation” she made against the late Oromoni but the police were yet to do so.

Sylvester’s death is one of the harrowing passing of schoolchildren resulting from bullying and molestations in boarding secondary schools of late.

Karen-Happuch Akpagher of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, had died of sexual molestation in June 2021 while Don Davies of Deeper Life High School, Uyo, had also narrowly escaped death in December 2020, when his mother raised the alarm of alleged sodomy of her emaciated son.
