New information came to light, on Tuesday, that clarified why the incoming president, Bola Tinubu, had separate meetings in Paris on Monday with the former governors Rabiu Kwankwaso and Muhammadu Sanusi II of Kano.

In a meeting with Kwankwaso, Tinubu extended a hand of friendship with the intention of collaborating with him if he succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29.

Credible sources, however, told MDB that the Paris meeting was a tripartite one because in addition to the meeting between Tinubu and Kwankwaso, the president-elect also held meetings with Sanusi and the former emir.

“The three separate meetings were meant to strengthen ties. The president-elect seriously needs the support of the two leading personalities from Kano,” the source said.

“While Kwankwaso is a politician in his own right who has a large followership not only in Kano but across the North, the former emir is a technocrat who knows the economy very well as evident in how he handled the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

Tinubu and Kwankwaso had a lengthy meeting in the French capital of Paris.

According to reports, the former governor of Lagos instructed Kwankwaso to inform his political allies of the importance of cooperating.

The new president and his guest reportedly decided to schedule additional meetings.

But in addition to that, it was learned that Kwankwaso had been promised a ministerial position by the president-elect.

“He told the NNPP leader to choose between the ministry of agriculture and that of education,” one of our sources said.

It is not clear whether Kwankwaso will accept to serve as a minister in the event they sealed the partnership or he will give the slot to one of his loyalists.

There were no details of what Kwankwaso and Emir Sanusi discussed but a source said they met for two hours and the discussion may not be unconnected with the recent political developments in Kano.

However, there were rumours that the incoming NNPP government in Kano will revisit the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi.
