Afrobeat superstars, Tems and Wizkid have bagged awards at the just concluded Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award ceremony.

The 2022 BET Awards show held on Monday, June 27 at Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles several weeks after the nomination list was unraveled.

Three Nigerian musicians were looking to come back home with an award, however, only Tems and Wizkid emerged victorious on the historic night.

As for Yahoo Boy No Laptop (YBNL) singer, Fireboy performed on stage at the BET Awards ceremony.

For the legendary Wizkid, he made history when ‘Essence‘ featuring Tems was announced as the best collaboration.

With the win, ‘Essence‘ becomes the first African song to win a BET award and Wizkid becomes the first Nigerian and African to win an Award outside the Best International Acts category.

Meanwhile, Tems made history at the 2022 BET awards when she became the first African female to win the Best International Category.

Tems has now joined the elongating list of Nigerian musicians who have won a BET Award. Other names include; Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as Nigerians who have won the BET Awards.

In receiving the award, Tems gave a brief speech dedicating her award to every young woman striving to one day live their dreams.

She said;

Thank you so much for this, thank you so much.
It’s an honour…

I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home. Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.
