Brown, a running back at Football Championship Subdivision school Duquesne, died at a Pittsburgh hospital after plunging from the window at an on-campus building around 10:30 p.m., according to a letter to the campus community from university president Ken Gormley.

The Pittsburgh Police Department, which confirmed the details of Brown’s death but did not identify him by name, is investigating the incident, according to a news release. Brown jumped from a window at Brottier Hall after campus police arrived on the floor to respond to a reported disturbance, according to Gormley’s letter.

Counselors have been made available to Duquesne students and staff, he wrote, and a memorial service on campus is being tentatively planned for Sunday evening. “Please join me in praying for Marquis, his family, and his many friends and teammates during this time of great sadness for the entire campus community,” Gormley wrote in the letter. “May he rest in peace.”

Brown is listed on Duquesne’s football roster as a sophomore, though the university identified him as a junior. A product of DeMatha Catholic High School in Washington, he had three carries for seven yards in one game so far this season.
