Today’s MDB Music playlist is designed to encourage patriotism and nationalism.

The 2023 presidential election is currently underway as Nigerians seek to elect a new leader for her nation.

It is quintessential that every citizen (of eligible age) enters into the street across the 36 of the nation to execute their civic responsibility.

Here are ten songs that discuss the essence of participating and engaging in the decision making of the nation. Most of the songs featured on this playlist discusses some of the upheavals and turmoil of the common; as a matter of fact, the lyrics are relatable.

  1. Eedris AbdulkareemNigeria Jaga Jaga

Released almost two decades ago, ‘Nigeria Jaga Jaga’ has remained a classic since it’s debut in the early 2000s.

2. FalzTalk

Falz is renowned as one of the modern day artistes who has never shied away from criticizing those in power. His song, ‘Talk’ released in 2019 reveals some of the heinous incidents that has happened in the country in recent times.

3. FalzJohnny

Once again, Falz appears on our MDB playlist- this time, for the song, ‘Johnny’. Though the music video gained notoriety during the #EndSARS protest in 2020, the single itself was released off his 4th music project, Moral Instruction.

The music video disclosed the theme of police brutality, extrajudicial killing and other nefarious occurrences that emanated at the time.

4. AsaJailer

A statement by former beauty queen, Esther Gabriel admonished Nigerians to ‘free themselves from shackles’. It is more like an allusion to sensational singer, Asa‘s classic, ‘Jailer’.

5.  Timi Dakolo– Great Nation

Nigerian sensational musician, Timi Dakolo believes that his native land can become great again. His song, ‘Great Nation’ has been performed at various symposiums, events, political rallies, etc.

6. TY Bello– Greenland

‘Greenland’ by the multitalented Christian singer-songwriter and photographer, TY Bello has remained one of the most symbolic songs in modern history.

Released in 2007, the song also encourages Nigerians to move away from the state of fear and discomfort to a land of hope and possibilities.

7. Sound Sultan– Motherland

Before the colloquial terminology, ‘Japa’ became prominent, the late recording artiste, Sound Sultan left a message for his fellow countrymen, ‘Nowhere can be like home‘, lyrics to his classic, ‘Motherland‘ reads.

8.  Kush– Let’s Live Together

Kush, a renowned gospel band in the early 2000s released a song titled, Let’s Live Together in the 2000s.

The song re-establishes the statement “united we stand, divided we fall”. It also reminds Nigerians of the need to live together in peace and harmony.

9. African China- Mr President

‘Mr. President’ was African China’s reminder to the political class to govern rightly and ensure there’s justice, fairness, and equity in the land irrespective of status, religion, or creed.

10.  Song of Unity– Nigerian leaders

This song was performed by Nigerian leaders, both past heads of states and democratic leaders men.

The song, which was a declaration of unity in the country features Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Shonekan Oladipo Diya, and the late Alex Ekwueme.
