Following President Bola Tinubu’s approval in October 2023, multiple sources within Nigerian universities have confirmed the commencement of salary payments to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), whose wages had been withheld for eight months. However, doubts about the full resolution of the ongoing labor dispute remain.

As reported by PUNCH Online, some ASUU members have begun receiving portions of their withheld salaries.

Professor Gbolahan Bolarin, ASUU chair at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, confirmed the initial payments.

The extent of payments and whether they encompass the full eight months remain unclear.

The withheld salaries arose from the prolonged dispute between ASUU and the Federal Government over working conditions and funding for public universities.

President Tinubu’s October 2023 approval promised the release of four months’ worth of wages, suggesting further payments are expected.

This development comes amidst continued negotiations between ASUU and the government, raising questions about the full resolution of the dispute and potential further industrial action.
