LASTMA Arrests Driver For Killing Passerby In Lagos Due To Reckless Driving

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a private vehicle driver after he allegedly killed a passerby in Ogba, Lagos State.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, on Saturday.

According to the statement, Adebayo confirmed that the initial inquiry showed that the driver of an unregistered white “Mercedes Benz car with registration number CLA 250 over-sped and lost control, striking an innocent bystander who died instantly.

The statement added that after realising that the innocent bystander had died in the collision, LASTMA personnel caught the fleeing driver.

The commander of the LASTMA rescue team, Akinola Ganiyu, confirmed that he was later turned over to police officers from Area ‘G’ Police Command, who were also present at the scene of the accident, for further investigation.

According to Ganiyu, the LASTMA Commander, “While the vehicle was immediately cleared off the road for free vehicular movement, members of the deceased family later came and removed the corpse.”

The statement partly read, “Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) early today apprehended a reckless private car driver after killing an innocent passerby around Ogba, Lagos.

“The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, in a press statement released this morning, disclosed that the fatal accident happened around Yaya Abatan by College Road, Ogba, Ikeja.

“Mr. Adebayo confirmed that preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of an unregistered white ‘Mercedes Benz’ (CLA 250) car lost control as a result of overspeeding and hit an innocent passerby who died instantly.

“LASTMA personnel apprehended the driver while running away after he saw that the innocent passerby had died as a result of the accident.”

“LASTMA Akinola Ganiyu (Commander, Agege) Iju-Ifako axis, who led the Lastma rescue team, confirmed that he was later handed over to Police from Area ‘G’ Police Command, who were equally at the scene of the accident for further investigations.

“According to LASTMA Commander Ganiyu, “While the vehicle was immediately cleared off the road for free vehicular movement, members of the deceased family later came and removed the corpse.”

“The General Manager of LASTMA Mr Bolaji Oreagba, however, cautioned the motoring public to stop over speeding, obey road signs and speed limit while driving on the road, particularly at the ‘Ember Months’ period.”
