Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been suspended by Paris St-Germain for two weeks after travelling to Saudi Arabia without the club’s permission this week.

The trip followed the French club’s home defeat by Lorient on Sunday, in which Messi played the full 90 minutes.

Messi will not train or play for the club for the period of his suspension.

It is understood the 35-year-old asked permission to make the journey to carry out commercial work but was refused.

Messi has a role as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia.

The Argentina captain has scored 24 goals for his club this season.

Meanwhile, L’Équipe report that Paris Saint-Germain has decided against offering Lionel Messi a contract extension past the end of this season, with the forward’s unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia this week ostensibly the nail in the coffin.

The contract that Messi signed when he first arrived in 2021 included a clause for an optional third season, which all of the deciders at the club have now agreed not to trigger.

The league leaders’ management were already leaning towards not offering a renewal, but the former Barcelona man’s inside circle had been insisting that the Ligue 1 champions were intent on re-signing him.
