Breaking: APC Chairman, Adamu Announces Lawan As Consensus Candidate

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced Senate President Ahmed Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party.

According to The Nation, Senator Abdullahi Adamu announced the development on Monday at the meeting of the party’s national working committee (NWC), held in Abuja.

His adoption of Lawan as consensus candidate is against the position of 11 APC northern Governors, who few days endorsed that power must shift to the South at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The decision for power shift was made during a meeting of governors in Abuja on Saturday night, with APC Northern governors also requesting that aspirants from the region withdraw.

Unfortunately, Adamu in latest development told the National Working Committee that he arrived at the choice of the Senate President after consultation with Buhari.

The party is also said to have decided that other presidential hopefuls will be allowed to participate in the presidential primary.

The latest development comes a day before the party’s convention to elect its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari is currently holding a closed-door meeting with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the north at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Although Buhari has maintained his position on the consensus arrangement, there has not been any agreement among the 23 presidential aspirants.

The governors in attendance were Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum and governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, chairman of Northern governors Forum and governors of Plateau State, Simeon Lalong, Abubakar Baduru (Jigawa) and Babagana Zulum (Borno).

Others were;

Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Bello Matawale (Zamfara), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Yahaya Inuwa (Gombe), Abubakar Bello (Niger), and the Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni.

The meeting with the APC governors from the north is said to be an effort to ensure that the party presents a consensus candidate so as to reduce acrimony that may arise at the end of the convention.
