Manchester City has strengthened their lead on the top of English Premier League (EPL) table by defeating the current Champions, Liverpool 4-1 on Sunday at Anfield stadium.

Liverpool suffered a third successive home defeat for the first time since 1963 as they were torn apart by their rivals, Manchester City in a five-goal thriller.

Three weeks ago, the idea of Liverpool losing a game at Anfield was unthinkable, now they have lost three times at Anfield within 21 days.

The memories of their 68-match unbeaten home run are growing distant and their title hopes lies in tatters.

Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker made two bad mistakes to help Manchester City to a commanding win. The Liverpool goalkeeper may arguably be considered as the best in the world but his mistakes at Anfield against City may be considered inexplicable at any level.

Meanwhile, City’s IIkay Gundogan missed a penalty in the first half but redeemed himself by scoring twice in the second half.

The first goal came in the 49th after he was the quickest to react from a shot parried away by Allison, the German fired a rebound shot into the roof of the net.

However, Mohammed Sallah was brought down in the box by Rueben Dias after the pacey Liverpool forward had a head start on a through ball, referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot, giving Liverpool a glimmer of hope.

The winner of the penalty, Mohammed Sallah stepped up the occasion and sent Ederson the wrong way hitting a powerful shot into the roof of the net in the 63rd minute.

Alisson committed two quick catastrophic errors gifting Gundogan his second goal of the day in the 73rd minute and Raheem Sterling in the 76th minute.

Phil Foden sealed the victory for the citizens in the 83rd minute sending a right footed shot into Alisson’s net, it would have been an easy parry for the Liverpool goalkeeper if he stood on his feet.

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola speaking to the media after the game said;

We cannot play they play because when they play with transitions, they are the best team in the world. In the second half, we adjusted our set up, and the quality of the players did the rest.

On his part, Liverpool’s Manager Jurgen Klopp expressed;

The performance was good most of the time. For the goals we made them against each team, it’s a problem. Against City, it’s a killer.

Phil Foden was given the Man of the match award after his magnificent performance.
