Just In: Nigeria’s Coronavirus Toll Surpasses 17,000 As NCDC Announces 490 New Cases

Nigeria’s coronavirus infection toll has surpassed the 17,000 mark after recording 490 new COVID-19 cases in 15 states and Federal Capital Territory.

The new mark comes just two days after recording over 16,000 cases, indicating an increase of 1,063 additional cases between June 14th and June 16th.

This spike in cases is attributed to high community transmission rate.

The agency made the announcement on Tuesday night via its Twitter handle, saying;

Total coronavirus cases in Nigeria have now jumped from 16,658 confirmed on Monday to 17,148.

Total number of fatalities has increased from 424 to 455, while the number of discharged patients increased from 5,349 recorded yesterday to 5,623.

Also, NCDC announced in its COVID-19 situation report that total samples tested have also grown from 94,323 to 96,402 as at June 15.

Meanwhile, Imo State House of Assembly has been shut down for the next two weeks following the announcement that a lawmaker tested positive to the coronavirus disease.

The chairman of the COVID-19 taskforce in the state, Professor Maurice Iwu disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Owerri the state capital on Tuesday.

He said samples of all other lawmakers and their aides have been taken to the laboratory for testing to ascertain those infected, to commence contact tracing.
