President Buhari Loses Personal Bodyguard

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the death of his personal bodyguard, Wo Lawal Mato.

The Presidency announced this in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

In the statement, Mato was described as a very thorough, trustworthy and dependable soldier, who carried out his duty with diligence and focus.

Shehu said;

After three years of struggling with diabetes, one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s bodyguards, Warrant Officer Lawal Mato, on Tuesday passed away.

He added that;

The President described the officer, who had been working with him for many years before he won the 2015 elections, as very thorough, trustworthy and dependable soldier who carried out his duty with diligence and focus.

Shehu expressed that;

President Buhari prayed that Allah will ease his passage to paradise and grant his family, government and people of Jigawa State, the fortitude to bear the loss.

According to the statement, Mato was part of a team that former President Umaru Musa Yar’adua restored to President Buhari as personal security.

Shehu stated that he had been off full duty for three years, treating diabetes.

This news comes three days after President Buhari lost his close friend and Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari to Coronavirus complications.

Abba Kyari, who died on Friday was buried in Abuja on April 18 at Gudu cemetery, Abuja according to Islamic rites with numerous family members and friends present.

President Muhammadu Buhari was however not present for the burial procession.

Kyari died on Friday at a private hospital in Lagos, about four weeks after he was confirmed positive for COVID-19 after he returned from a trip in Germany.

The late Chief of Staff died at age 67.
