Coronavirus: “Lagos State Treating Patients Suffering From Chloroquine Poisoning” – Lagos Cautions Nigerians

The Lagos State government has on March 20 disclosed that following the announcement by President Donald Trump that chloroquine can be used to treat coronavirus, hospitals in the state has received patients suffering from chloroquine poisoning.

The demand for chloroquine, an oral artemisinin-based monotherapies (oAMTs) for malaria treatment, soared a few hours after President Donald Trump said the drug had been approved to treat COVID-19 in the US. 

But Stephen Hahn, commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, contradicted the American president, saying the agency was still working to examine all possibilities.

The Lagos State government, through the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Health, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih was quoted by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Gboyega Akosile, as saying that some hospitals in the state are now treating patients who took too many quantities of chloroquine, leading to poisoning.

In a tweet on March 20, Akosile warned people against harming themselves through the indiscriminate use of the drug.
