The Federal Government has banned the importation of small generators popularly known as ‘I better pass my neighbour.’

Controller, Federation Operations Unit Zone A, Lagos of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Madugu Sanni Jubrin, made this known while speaking with newsmen in Lagos yesterday.

He said that the command confiscated 4,733 goods worth N52 million and arrested some suspected smugglers since he assumed duties one week ago.

According to him:

“The smaller generators have been banned by the Federal Government because it is causing air pollution and destruction of our lungs and breathing system. That is why they have banned it but people are still interested in smuggling them in, that is why we intercepted them”, he said.

Good development?

Steady power supply will be appreciated before effecting this kind of Ban on Masses.

Moji, my generator mechanic begs to differ, cos repairing those small generators brings him more steady income.
He repairs more of those gen than any other, cos they always develop fault no matter how cautious you are, and he usually hike the spare parts price, that’s quick bucks for him. Now his source of livelihoods is reduced.

Nigerians have a lot to border about, from Boko haram, fuel scarcity, militant, to biafra and so on, why add to their pain. This small gen, at least the good ones is known for its fuel management and a lot of small scale businesses benefits from it, at least those that can’t afford the big generator e.g barbers, Lotto/bet shop owners etc. All these people need is just a little power to do business.

I know Moji’s got a point, cos my neighbours generator drive me crazy sometimes, and the oil that leaked on the ground afterwards is just annoying, but that’s what she can afford for now, just to watch her favourite TV show and turn on her fan in this heat period. I cut her some slacks because it’s a hard knock life living in Lagos, and we all do what we gotta do to survive. Ive once used that kinda generator, but thank God I’ve graduated to a bigger and better generator that I service once a month so that it does not develop fault.
We all start from somewhere and we all deserve a chance to make a living. The FG have done nothing to improve situation in the country, from power to fuel generation, and now they still wanna make matters worse for the upcoming and small scale businesses.
I use 10litres of fuel for about 13-14hrs, on my 3800DC generator, but this 950Dc generator go as long as 8-9hrs on 4litres, which is good for their business , cos they are not using heavy equipment.
I still think the FG needs to provide a conducive environment that is good for business before embarking on this kinda move.

It seems this government does careless about the social wellbeing of the masses. There’s no steady power supply and the cheapest way to get an alternative to that is being blocked.

Govt does not need to ban these type of gen set, all they need to do is to provide regular power supply and the demand for these generator will die a natural death.
