The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) says investigation into the death of Vwaere Diaso is still ongoing.

Diaso, a medical house officer, died from injuries sustained during an elevator accident at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, in August.

Speaking with NAN on Tuesday, Ismail Ajibowo, secretary of Lagos NMA branch, said last week, the association met with Akin Abayomi, Lagos commissioner for health, about the case and other issues affecting the state’s healthcare system.

He added that the NMA would ensure justice is served to avert future occurrence.

“We await the outcome of the investigations as it will determine our next steps or action,” Ajibowo said.

He noted that activities have since resumed at the hospital, as the welfare of patients remains foremost.

Diaso’s death had sparked outrage, prompting the Lagos government to set up a panel to probe the incident.

The NMA, on August 2, directed medical doctors in three government hospitals on Lagos Island to embark on an indefinite strike over the death of Diaso.

The association also directed all doctors in all the other government hospitals in the state to scale down activities as a sign of respect for the victim.

On August 6, based on the recommendation of the panel, the Lagos government suspended Adenike Adekanbi, general manager of Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA).

The government also sacked and blacklisted the facility managers in charge of the Lagos Island General Hospital, Odan.
