The Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party, on Monday, claimed that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s plea for an extension of his medical vacation had validated its position.

Instead of misleading the public, it requested that the government be honest about the governor’s health.

The PDP responded to Akeredolu’s letter, in which the governor requested an extension of his medical vacation, which was delivered to the Ondo State House of Assembly on Monday.

The governor has been absent due to illness since June 5, and his return was scheduled for July 6.

He informed the state Assembly in writing that he had given Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the deputy governor, the authority to serve as acting governor before leaving for a medical leave of absence abroad.

The Assembly’s Speaker, Mr. Olamide Oladiji, said in a statement on Monday that the House had received a letter from Akeredolu asking for an extension of his sick leave on the grounds that his physicians had urged him to continue resting and recovering before returning to work.

The Governor’s conduct, according to the Speaker, was in accordance with Section 190 of the Constitution.

But reacting to the development, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Ondo State, Mr Kennedy Peretei, said Akeredolu’s letter seeking extension vindicated the position of the party.

Peretei said “In the statement, I issued yesterday ( Sunday), I queried the Commissioner for Information, when she said, in her statement, that the governor was in high spirits but would return on a date determined by his doctors in Germany.

“The statement was inadequate. We expected the governor to write the Assembly again to extend his vacation.

“But today (Monday) they have just admitted that, that he has written to Assembly for the vacation.

“As long as it has to do with the governor’s health, there is nothing we can do and it is our prayer for the governor to recover quickly.”
