Celebrities, Politicians Lose Twitter Verification Check As Musk Enforces Paid Subscription

One of the few remaining relics from the time before Elon Musk became the owner of Twitter, the legacy blue checkmarks, appear to have been officially retired.

The free blue checks Twitter provided to journalists, celebrities, and other public figures in an effort to reduce spam and impersonation were meant to expire on April 1.

Musk changed the expiration date to April 20 or 4/20 on Twitter on April 11 – days after the legacy checkmarks should have vanished.

With the removal of the heritage checkmarks, Twitter will only have verification marks for paying users, corporations, and government agencies.

Now, if a user sees a blue checkmark and clicks on it, the label reads;

Some users, including TechCrunch reporters, experienced Thursday a “flickering” blue checkmark on their profiles. Others have seen their blue checkmarks disappear altogether.

Under Musk’s rule, Twitter hasn’t held back on its promise to remove the legacy checkmarks from even the highest of profiles figures. Even Pope Francis couldn’t escape the great unchecking of 4/20.
