Lionel Messi led the Argentine national team to their third World Cup trophy on Sunday, December 18.

The 35-year-old football icon scored seven goals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament, amassing a total of 13 goals at the conclusion of the most watched sport in the world.

After an abysmal commencement to the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar where they lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia. Messi was able to inspire his national team to a 2-0 win against Mexico in the second group game.

It was in the knockout stages Lionel Messi once again came alive, haven’t never scored in the knockout phases of a world cup competition, the football icon was able to lead Argentina to a 2-1 win against Australia.

In the temperamental quarter-finals game between Argentina and Netherlands, the seven-time Ballon D’Or winner scored from the penalty spot before leading his pack to a 4-3 win on penalties.

The result in the semi-finals was quite underwhelming for the Croatian national team as Argentina cruised to a 3-0 win.

The match between France and Argentina would go down in history as one of the most enthralling football finals in modern history.

After taking a 2-0 lead, Kylian Mbappe‘s double made sure the French got back into the game and dragged the game into extra-time. Mbappe would respond to a Lionel Messi‘s second half extra-time goal before the game was decided on penalties.

He continued, “So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it……

The four times champions league winner went further to appreciate his family, fans and teammates for their support.

Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us.

We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim.

The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians… We did it!!!
