The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, on Saturday, August 20, denied any involvement in the attack on Kafayat Oyetola, the governor’s wife, on her convoy on Friday night.

The governor’s wife’s convoy was ambushed in Owode-Ede town on the way to Osogbo, the state capital.

According to accounts, a broken-down truck produced a hold-up that prevented the motorcade from moving, which was travelling without a siren.

Gunshots were fired in the subsequent chaos, injuring security personnel attached to the First Lady of Osun as well as other people, and five people were taken into custody.

A statement released on Saturday and signed by Oladele Oluwabamiji, the Osun PDP Media Director, revealed that the problem started when the security details attached to the governor’s wife beat up the driver of the truck.

According to the statement;

We are shocked to read this morning the futile attempt by the office of the outgoing First Lady to cover up the irresponsible conduct of her escort who beat up a truck driver at Owode, leading to public angry reactions against her entire convoy.

Eye witness accounts further revealed that as at the time the convoy was attacked, the angry crowd was not even aware of who was in the convoy until reinforcement was sent to the scene from Government House with sporadic shootings.

We have gone this far with the details of the incident to strongly deny allegations that PDP thugs were responsible for the self-inflicted attacks on the convoy of the First Lady.

Further Appeal

The Osun PDP insisted that its members would never harass and abuse defenseless people whose sole transgression was attending to their basic needs in the face of an economy that had been carelessly wrecked by the First Lady’s party.

The group demanded that the First Lady apologise to the truck driver for the brutal treatment he endured, noting that the First Lady’s quick trip to the hospital was insufficient atonement for the transgressions of her overzealous escort.
