ASUU Reportedly Extends Strike By Two MonthsAcademic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) extends its warning strike by eight weeks following their recent meeting on the fate of University students.

ASUU made the decision at a prolonged meeting of National Executive Council (NEC) which started on Sunday and ended early Monday morning.

NEC meeting was held at the union’s national secretariat at the University of Abuja.

Recall that ASUU had on February 14, embarked on a one month warning strike over the Federal Government’s inability to meet the demands the two parties entered into in previous times.

However, in latest development according to PremiumTimes, a member of the NEC who does not want to be quoted to avoid sanctions by the union, said a statement is currently being drafted by the leadership of ASUU and that as soon as it is ready, it will be distributed.

The source said;

Yes, we have extended the strike by eight weeks pending when the Nigerian government would find the university system worthy of the desired attention. A statement is currently being drafted to that effect. We will make it available soon.

This comes after the union revealed that its proposed payment platform to Federal Government was deemed unfit and lacked integrity.

ASUU has been putting pressure for its own platform, the Universities Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) to be approved for paying lecturers instead of the old method which is the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

ASUU also declared the strike to re-echo its demands of revitalisation of public universities, payment of earned allowances, improved funding of state universities, and promotion arrears for members.
