Ex-Zamfara Deputy Gov Shot In Attack On Abuja-Kaduna TrainIbrahim Wakkala, former deputy governor of Zamfara state, sustained gunshot wounds from the attack on a train going to Kaduna state from Abuja.

The train conveying hundreds of passengers from Abuja to Kaduna was attacked by gunmen suspected to be bandits between Katari and Rijana in Kaduna State.

Channels Television quoted Yusuf Idris, an aide of the former deputy governor, as saying Wakkala was returning from the APC national convention that was held on Saturday.

The former deputy Governor visited in the hospital by Kaduna Governor, El Rufai.

He said the former deputy Governor was shot during the cross fire between the terrorists and the military and has been moved to a military hospital in Kaduna for treatment.

The spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Yusuf Idris also confirmed the incident.

Idris said the former Deputy Governor was initially abducted by the terrorists during the attack and was successfully rescued by the combined forces of DSS and Military.

Idris added;

He was initially abducted but was rescued by the DSS and military, it was during the process he sustain gunshot injury in the leg. He is very okay now, he is receiving treatment at the hospital in Kaduna state.

Meanwhile, Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended its operations along Abuja-Kaduna route.

Also, Kaduna State Government has confirmed that some of the passengers aboard the Kaduna-bound train were killed.

The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday March 29.

It, however, did not reveal the number of those killed or those who suffered injuries.

In a statement signed by Aruwan, the state government expressed that the evacuation of the trapped passengers has been concluded but search and rescue operations continued.

One of the victims of the incident is a doctor named Chinelo, who died few hours after tweeting that she had been shot.
