Streaming giant, Netflix’s The Crown dominated at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, with seven honors, including drama series.
Top television stars showed up in person for the Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday night at Los Angeles Event Deck, instead of the Microsoft Theater which has been home to the Emmys since 2008.
Unlike last year’s virtual ceremony, this year, it was an in-person event. Concerns over the Delta variant of the coronavirus forced Sunday’s ceremony to move to an outdoor tent in downtown Los Angeles, with a reduced guest list and mandatory vaccinations and testing.
Netflix dominated the Emmys last night by finally winning television’s biggest prizes with The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit at the scaled-down ceremony.
The streaming giant had never won any top series prize before yesterday at the small-screen equivalent of the Oscars. Now, it has two of them.
The Crown, which went in with 11 nominations, proved to be the big winner — with 7 wins, including Outstanding Drama Series, and awards for directing, writing, and four acting awards for Tobiaz Menzies, Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor and Gillian Anderson.
Olivia Colman – who previously won an Oscar for playing Britain’s Queen Anne in The Favourite – scooped best actress for portraying her descendant Queen Elizabeth II.
Josh O’Connor, named best actor for playing Charles, said making the show had been “the most rewarding two years of my life.”
The Crown also won both supporting actor prizes – including one for Gillian Anderson for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher – and awards for best writing and directing.
Its tally including technical awards handed out before yesterday’s ceremony came to 11 – tied this year with The Queen’s Gambit, and one short of the drama record held by Game of Thrones.
However, limited series lead actress prize went to Kate Winslet for small-town whodunit detective drama Mare of Easttown, which also won both limited series supporting acting awards for Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters.
Apple TV+ global smash hit Ted Lasso won best comedy series and a slew of acting prizes. Going into the show, Ted Lasso was the hot favourite with most nominations, 13. It went on to clinch 4 trophies, including three acting awards and 1 win for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Female directors hit a milestone Sunday night, as “The Crown’s” Jessica Hobbs and “Hacks’” Lucia Aniello won the awards for outstanding directing for a drama series and a comedy series, respectively. This is the first time that women have swept both directing categories in the same year.
Also, Jason Sudeikis took home the award for best actor in a comedy series and Jean Smart won a trophy in best lead actress category for HBO Max series Hacks.
