Simone Biles Wins Bronze In Balance Beam Final Upon Return To Tokyo Olympics Action

American gymnast, Simone Biles has on Tuesday, August 4 returned to action at the Tokyo Olympics in an impressive fashion by securing bronze in balance beam final.

It would be recalled that the American withdrew from four other individual finals she was due to compete in as she looked to improve her mental health and also battled with a bout of a phenomenon known as the ‘twisties’.

Twisties is something gymnasts can experience when they have a mental block which sees them lose spatial awareness during moves, often mid-air.

They feel like they have completely lost control of themselves and it can obviously be very dangerous when performing complicated skills.

However, she decided to put her problems behind her impressively with a superb routine which scored her 14.000 and gave her the bronze medal, her seventh Olympic medal after five in Rio five years ago.

The six-time Olympic medalist shocked the world when she pulled herself out of the all-around, vault, floor exercise and uneven bars finals to focus on her mental health.

She gave her coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landi a huge hug as soon as she left the floor as she beamed with happiness before sharing an emotional embrace with her teammate and Olympic champion Sunisa Lee.

Biles waved to the crowds and jumped up and down in happiness before hugging the other athletes as she looked relieved that she completed her routine.

It is her final chance for a gold medal after she pulled out of four final competitions – a move that was criticized by some but ultimately praised for putting her mental health before competing.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Chenchen Guan won gold for China with a score of 14.633, while her compatriot took silver Xijing TangGuan with 14.233 score.

Earlier on Monday, USA Gymnastics announced that Biles will be joining her teammate Lee in the balance beam final.

It stated;

We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow. Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!

Despite her pull out from some events at the Olympics, Biles took on the role of cheerleader and spectator throughout each of the finals, including the floor exercise event on Monday, during which she was seen clapping and yelling while Carey, 21, competed in the Ariake Gymnastics Center.
