Benin Republic May Determine Sunday Igboho’s Asylum Request This Week – Lawyer

‘What About Bandits, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi?’ - Nigerians Slam FG Over Sunday Igboho’s ArrestAsylum request made by Sunday Igboho, Yoruba nation agitator, may be decided this week by authorities of Benin Republic, his lawyer said.

It would be recalled that Igboho and his wife, Ropo were arrested at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou on their way to Germany.

While, Ropo was released after the pair were arraigned before a court in the country, Igboho remains in custody after extradition hearing on the request of Federal Government was stalled.

Igboho is now being tried by the Benin Court on fresh charges bordering on illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers, and an attempt to cause civil unrest.

However, the court has granted him access to medical care and ordered that he be transferred to another detention facility.

He had fled Nigeria after his Oyo home was raided by operatives of Department of State Services (DSS). Two persons were killed by the DSS in the raid while 12 others were arrested and whisked to Abuja.

His lawyers said they delayed application for his bail pending the outcome of the asylum request, noting that they are desperate to ensure that he is not sent back to Nigeria, ThePunch reports.

Olasupo Ojo, one of the lawyers, said though there had not been an official statement from Benin Republic government on the asylum request, there is hope that a position will be made known this week.

He told the publication that; “No official position on the asylum request but we are expecting feedback this week”.
