Sadio Mane Concedes Premier League Title Defeat, Says Champions League Is The Main Target

Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane has expressed that he believes his team cannot retain English Premier League (EPL) title this season.

The club’s 30-year EPL draught for Liverpool was brought to an end last season. Mane helped his team to their first top-flight title when the Anfield outfit lifted the trophy at the end of 2020-21 campaign. They also lifted Champions league trophy a season before their EPL triumph.

However, this season, they have been ravaged by injuries and poor form with Virgil Van Dijk being a notable name on the injury list. As a result of that, they are in the sixth position on EPL table.

Reacting to this, Senegalese in an interview with ESPN Brazil on Wednesday, said the point difference between the Reds (Liverpool) and table leaders, Manchester City was too wide to overcome.

The attacker feels that claiming back-to-back top-tier titles is out of reach, stressing;

First of all, before the end of the season I think, not only me, but every single player in the squad has targets. It’s the same for the club. Our target from the beginning was [winning] the Champions League, the Premier League and also cup games. And now, I can say it’s over for the Premier League … it’s too much.

In our head, our self-belief, it’s always ‘never give up’, and we won’t give up, but for sure, Manchester [City] are a good team and they’re flying.

When asked about Liverpool’s target, he said:

Beyond the top four is now, right now, our main target. But the Champions League, that is our main, main, main target. To win it, not be second, but it won’t be easy.

We are going to face the best teams in Europe, but we’re here to beat the best in the world. We’ll do everything possible to go forward and win the Champions League.

It would be recalled that Liverpool lost 2-0 to Everton in a Mersyside derby at Anfield in their last game in the EPL. They have now lost their last four matches – Burnley, Brighton, Manchester City and Everton.

They are to face struggling Sheffield United side in the Premier League before taking in a home date with fellow top-four hopefuls Chelsea.
