First Civilian Governor Of Lagos, Lateef Jakande Laid To Rest Body of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first civilian governor of Lagos state, have been laid to rest on Friday, February 12.

He died in the early hours of Thursday, February 11. He was 91 years old.

Late Jakande was governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983. He also served as the Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime from 1993 to 1998.

While serving as Lagos Governor, Jakande also known as Baba Kekere, brought a lot of development to the state between October 1, 1979 and December 31, 1983, in line with the five cardinal programmes of Unity Party of Nigeria founded by a former Premier of the Western Region, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

His administration as governor of Lagos state is still revered for the massive infrastructural development recorded during his four-year stint especially the numerous Jakande Estates built across many local governments in the State as well as sterling investment in schools.

Some of the housing units include low cost estates in Amuwo-Odofin, Ijaiye, Dolphin, Oke-Afa, Ije, Abesan, Iponri, Ipaja, Abule Nla, Epe, Anikantamo, Surulere, Iba, Ikorodu, Badagry.

After the military take-over in 1983, Jakande served as Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime.

President Muhammadu Buhari, governors and other prominent dignitaries have mourned the former Governor.

Buhari, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, expressed the belief that Alhaji Jakande lived for the good of others, Lagos State and Nigeria as a nation.

He said;

President Muhammadu Buhari believes former Governor of Lagos State, Chief Lateef Jakande, lived for the good of others, state and country, and his legacy of standing for all that was right for humanity would be long remembered.

The President, while condoling with family, friends and associates of the elder statesman, affirms that his imprint on the commercial nerve centre of the country, Lagos State, which was the former National capital, will continue to awe and inspire, reminding everyone of the strength of character and sacrifices of the visionary leader.

President Buhari notes contributions of the first civilian Governor of Lagos State and former Minister of Works to the growth of democracy and good governance in the country, describing him as a patriot, whose wisdom will run through generations, especially in putting people first in development plans.

On his part, current Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed gratitude to God saying Jakande lived “a worthy life well spent in the service of Lagos State, Nigeria, and humanity.”

He described the late elder statesman as an “outstanding politician and public administrator” whose record of service as a journalist of repute and a leader of remarkable achievements as governor of Lagos State will remain indelible for generations to come.
