Rio Ferdinand has opined that Manchester United are “choked” and therefore believes they are out of the race to win Premier League title.

United were the leaders of the table at the turn of the new year and were still leaders after game week 19, but a poor run of two draws and a defeat in their last four games have seen Manchester City overtake and extend the gap on the top of the table.

The club is now five points behind Manchester City, having played a game more than their rivals.

Reacting to this, the former English professional player feels the opportunity to win the league has far slipped off the grasp of United.

Ferdinand speaking via his YouTube Channel opined;

You can’t defend it, Man United were sitting pretty at the top of the league. You see the league table, you look at the results, you get excited. When you put yourself in that position, Man United have to strike.

You can see Man City with their experience, they’ve smelt blood, they’ve put their heads down, they’ve gone. But Manchester United have stuttered, we’ve got the choke going in and out, haven’t got it quite working properly.

He stressed;

We have choked, it’s simple as that. I’d put us out of the title challenge unless we go on a run and we change our habits and our lack of consistency. But I haven’t seen enough to suggest we can go on a ten, 15- game winning streak, we’re tripping ourselves up all the time.

United are still in the title race being five points adrift table leaders Manchester City in an unpredictable season. However, City have the momentum to run away with the Premier League title, having amassed 14 successive victories in all competitions and still counting.
