Canadian singer, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, has left many fans around the world shocked after he debuted a disturbing facial alterations in his latest music video.

Tesfaye appeared in ‘Save Your Tears’ video with a sharp jawline, accentuated cheekbones and raised eyebrows. His appearance was likened to someone who was suffering an allergic reaction.

While most fans believe it is a Botox-imitating ruse, some believed it was more permanent.

In August last year, the R&B artist prompted concern from some fans when he took to the stage with an apparently bloodied face during the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony.

Two months later, The Weeknd appeared at the American Music Award ceremony in November wearing bandages on his face.

Now, it appears that the two previous instances were a setup for his latest music video, which dropped on Tuesday, January 5.

The video for “Save Your Tears” sees the musician wearing the same red suit jacket worn at his last two public appearances.

Having removed the surgical bandages, the singer in his new video and a selfie shared on Instagram is seen using facial prosthetics to simulate the appearance of extreme plastic surgery, including fillers around his cheekbones and lips.

Make-up artist, Mike Marino has taken credit for the work via his Instagram page, saying;

The Weeknd’s facial alterations have since sparked reactions from around the world. Some fans compared the Grammy-winner’s look to “Handsome Squidward”, an online joke lifted from an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon.

In the episode, an octopus character named Squidward became unexpectedly and excessively chiselled when a door is slammed in his face.
