Former speaker of Edo state house of assembly Zakawanu Garuba‘s widow, Hassana has been released by her abductors after being kidnapped while on her way to her late husband’s burial on Saturday July 18.

The former lawmaker’s wife, his mother and three children were conveying his body to Edo state when she was kidnapped.

It was gathered that the gunmen ordered Garuba’s wife and her driver to follow them, while his mother and children were allowed to continue their journey to Edo state.

Few hours after Governor Godwin Obaseki released a statement over the incident, Hassana was released by her abductors. It is however not clear if a ransom was paid.

Younger brother to the deceased who confirmed the development, told The Nation that the whereabouts of the driver remain unknown.

William Aya, spokesman of the Kogi police command, confirmed that three persons were rescued but he did not disclose their identities.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the late Garuba has been laid to rest on Saturday according to Islamic rites.
