Sister of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, the University Of Benin student who was raped and murdered while reading in a church in Benin, has accused the police of demanding for ‘mobility fee’ before commencing investigation into the incident.
The deceased’s sister made the allegation after leading some youths in a protest to the Edo state police headquarters where they were received by Edo State Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of operations, Ayoola Ajala.
Uwaila’s sister stated that she is disappointed in the Nigerian Police for allegedly refusing to take up the case when it was reported.
She said she saw a post on social media where police alleged that her father refused to come make a statement at the police station after being summoned.
Uwaila’s sister denied this saying;
My father went there several times. The police even insulted him that he was a foolish man, that he was not the first that his daughter would be raped. They said they needed mobility money before they can do their job in investigating the death of my sister.
Some are even saying my sister incident happened on 14th May, my sister incident did not happen on 14th May, it happened on Wednesday, May 27, and she died on Saturday night May 30.
The late 22-year-old girl was reading inside a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God when she was sexually assaulted and hit in the head by a fire extinguishers.
One of the protesters also called for the interrogation of the Pastor of the church where Omozuwa was killed.
The incident had led to national outrage with many calling for perpetrators of the dastardly act to be fished out and punished.
Earlier today, the police announced the arrest of a suspect linked with the crime.
