Governor Obaseki decamps to PDP
Godwin Obaseki,
governor of Edo State, has joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following his resignation from former party, All Progressive Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on the official Twitter handle of the PDP on Friday afternoon.

According to the tweet, the declaration was made at the state Secretariat of PDP in Benin city, Edo State.

The tweet reads;

Breaking News! The governor of Edo State, H.E. Governor Obaseki has defected to our great Party, the PDP. The declaration was made this afternoon at the state Secretariat of our party in Benin city, Edo State. Power to the people.

The defection comes few days after he was disqualified from participating in his former party election primary and resigned afterwards.

It would be recalled that Governor Obaseki was disqualified on June 12 by the National Working Committee of APC over ‘questionable’ secondary school leaving certificate and NYSC certificate.

This sparked further controversy between Governor Obaseki and former National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, who have been at loggerheads for months.

The Governor thereafter resigned from the party, as well as his Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu and other members loyal to Obaseki.

There had earlier been speculations about the Governor decamping to PDP, with the hope of being nominated as the party’s candidate for the September governorship election.

The latest development as announced by PDP has now officially confirmed the new party of Governor Obaseki.

This indicates that the battle for the position of Edo State Governor will likely be between Governor Obaseki, if nominated as PDP candidate, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, APC aspirant.
