President of Liberia, Goerge Weah has announced a partial reopening of churches and mosques to hold prayer programmes regardless of the lockdown extension in the country.

In a statement, the President said emergency measures to curb the virus would be extended for two weeks but churches and mosques would be open with guidelines put in place for their programmes.

Weah stated that from Friday, May 15, mosques will reopen and from Sunday, May 17, churches will reopen.

According to him, the capacity at the places of worship will be limited to 25 per cent and social distancing measures will apply.

However, there remains a ban on all movement between the country’s 15 counties, the closure of non-essential businesses, and stay-at-home orders for Monrovia, the country’s capital with about one million inhabitants.

As at May 10, Liberia has recorded 199 cases of coronavirus, with 20 fatalities and 79 recoveries.

Meanwhile, coronavirus infection rate in Nigeria has now surpassed 4,000 cases on May 9th after Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) conformed 239 new cases.

The new mark comes barely a week after Nigeria recorded over 3,000 cases. Though the spike in cases is worrisome, the new figures show an increase in testing rate by the NCDC.

As at press time, there are 4,151 coronavirus cases in Nigeria. This shows a 31.9% increase between May 6th and May 9th.
