Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, daughter of Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy is trending on social media, especially Twitter, after  her new video ‘Charged Up’ failed to impress many music loving Nigerians.

The song which  features renown music producer MasterKraft is receiving a lot of backlash, with many likening the lack lustre lyrics to ‘Nursery Rhymes’. Trolls have described her as ‘lacking talent’, adding that despite her good videos, her lack of talent, good lyrics and beats  makes her songs  unpalatable to the taste of the Nigerian average music lover.

More diplomatic (but not many) social media users on the other hand argue that with consistency, better song writers and producers, her music could improve tremendously over time.

I took time out to watch the ‘charged up’ video and I didn’t think it was as bad as it was described it to be. The hook of the song is fair but for the super nursery like lines of the verse, which gets boring because of the lack of real rhythm and fuller lyrics to take up the beat. Also, the song ends really quickly and leaves the beat open, further exposing the lack of good lyrics in the first place.

Although lacking in talent, I am also of the view that if DJ Cuppy  works hard, gets better songwriters and producers, she could prove her detractors wrong. It is no news that hard work, determination and consistency, sometimes trumps talent. The money to  do this is readily available, and Nigerian social media users clearly feels the need to comment on everything she does so why not keep taking advantage of the free publicity?

DJ Cuppy graduated from King’s College London in July 2014 with a degree in Business and Economics and earned a Master’s Degree in Music Business from New York University in 2015. Rather than follow in her Dad’s business footsteps, She opted for entertainment instead. Cuppy started off as a DJ and has now evolved into music while DJin on the side. Till date, she has released several songs including ‘Currency’ featuring L.A.X and Green Light featuring Tekno. I liked Green Light and the song did well, which is an indication that better songs could still emerge from where that came from.

Dont be discouraged Cuppy, just work harder.
