A former coach of the Nigerian senior national team, the Super Eagles, Paul Hamilton, is dead.

Hamilton, who endured a long-running battle with a leg injury sustained during his playing days, reportedly passed away in the wee hours of Thursday at a military hospital in Lagos. He was 75 years.

Following the festering injury, the former player and coach earlier this year had his left leg amputated at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, but that was not enough as he breathed his last today.

Known by the nickname “Wonder Boy” Hamilton enjoyed a successful playing career with the defunct ECN that saw him win the Challenge Cup (now Federation Cup) twice in 1965 and 1970.

He led the U-20 side to bronze during the 1985 WYC in Russia, before enjoying stints with the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, whom he led to the maiden Women’s World Cup in China in 1991.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Durdy, children and grandchildren.
