2 Nigerians Face 20 Years Each In US Prison For $2m Romance Scam

Two Nigerians – 48 years old Kunle Mutiu Amoo and 61 year old Lanre Sunday have pleaded guilty to wire fraud romance scam conspiracy, according the United States’ law enforcement officers.

AP reports that the two accused living outside Houston pose as South African diplomats in ascheme to defraud victims by using romantic overtures and then falsely promised to repay them.

While explaining the mode of operation of the fraudsters, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson was reported by the news agency as saying one person would pose as manager of a construction companydoing business in South Africa and needing money to transfer $42 million in profits from there to the United States.

The fraudsters who are still in jail would be sentenced on Sept. 22.

Each of them could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
