Police Soft-Pedals On Decision To Arrest People Buying Fuel In Jerrycans, Targets Culprits In Fuel Hoarding, Diversion Instead

Listening to the agitation of Nigerians over its recent decision to arrest persons buying fuels in Jerrycans and plastic containers, the Nigeria Police Force has rescinded its decision, and taken a different approach.

The initial order by the IGP was contain the activities of blackmarketers and unscrupulous elements who engage in illegal sale of petroleum products.

Rather than go after those buying and selling the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise called petrol in jerry cans, the polices it will now target those who are involved in hoarding and diverting the petroleum products.

A statement by Olabisi Kolawole, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, said that those with genuine intention to use the products for their legal and genuine business are allowed to purchase the products.

The IGP emphasized that no stone will be left unturned by the Police to checkmate those with the attitude of causing discomfort to the innocent citizens in the country,” the statement stressed.
